Motion's View Anywhere Display

Introduction

Until recently, outdoor display solutions were expensive and required you to sacrifice the ability to view your display indoors. Displays optimized for outdoor use often performed poorly indoors - requiring you to choose between an indoor or an outdoor solution - but not both. Motion Computing's ground-breaking View Anywhere Display solution does not compromise indoor performance for outdoor performance - or vice versa. The bright, 12.1-inch XGA indoor-outdoor display uses a proprietary optical enhancement process based on technology initially developed for high-end military aviation and marine applications.

Motion's thin, lightweight Tablet PCs equipped with a View Anywhere Display empower you to take full advantage of the functionality and performance of an advanced mobile computing platform across a broader range of environments. The View Anywhere Display can adjust quickly from your office or home work environment to accommodate a variety of outdoor work scenarios. The display is designed for professionals such as inspectors, field engineers, surveyors, law enforcement personnel, military, construction superintendents, coaches, customer service reps, pilots, realtors or for anyone who uses the Tablet PC in bright light including automobiles or airplanes.

Compared with standard Tablet PC and notebook displays, Motion's View Anywhere Display provides excellent indoor viewing - while substantially improving outdoor viewing - yielding a combination of benefits unique in the Tablet PC market. The display delivers a 30-to-1 reduction in unwanted reflection and glare, thus improving the "effective" contrast ratio and viewing angle. It also provides a 15% improvement in brightness - allowing you to more easily view the display in a wide range of bright light situations. The result is a high-quality display equally suited for viewing in a wide range of indoor and outdoor conditions. Furthermore, the View Anywhere Display retains the traditional feel of pen on paper that has become a hallmark of Motion's ink-enabled Tablet PCs.

Display Comparison

The following chart illustrates the contrast ratio for each technology in various light conditions. The higher the contrast ratio, the easier the display is to view. Reflective technologies excel in extremely bright conditions. Traditional transmissive displays excel indoors. With an advanced display modification process, the Motion View Anywhere Display extends the performance of the transmissive display to perform extremely well indoors - while providing solid outdoor performance.

FAQ

Q: Why did Motion implement an enhanced transmissive display versus reflective or transflective technology?
A: Transmissive displays generally produce the best indoor and low light viewing capability. In the past, the screen content on transmissive displays "washes out" in bright outdoor sunlight - making them very difficult to use. Front/side-lit reflective technology is ideal for direct, outdoor lighting conditions but sub-optimal for indoor viewing. Front/side-lit reflective technology displays must be thicker to sandwich the additional light/bulb, thus creating unwanted parallax and an air space for dust to accumulate.
Transflective displays, similar to those used on many PDA devices, currently do not perform indoors as well as transmissive displays. Furthermore, transflective displays do not scale well to larger, high resolution displays. Motion's uniquely developed optical enhanced transmissive display solution eliminates undesirable "wash out" and reflection by improving opacity efficiency and brightness. The result is a high-quality display solution suitable for viewing "anywhere."
Q: Can I upgrade my existing Tablet PC to include the View Anywhere Display?
A: No. Currently, the View Anywhere Display is limited to new Motion Tablet PC product orders.
Q: Why is it so important to reduce glare and reflection?
A: Unwanted glare reduces the "effective" display viewing angle and contrast - limiting view-ability in bright light conditions. Unwanted light reflection reduces the "effective" display brightness - leading to a "washed-out" or dimly lit display.
Q: Why is the "pen feel" so important?
A: Motion put considerable engineering, market research and industrial design effort into our pen and display technology to closely approximate the traditional pen and paper experience. Ideally, writing should feel smooth with a slight amount of "drag." Excessive "drag" makes writing slow and tiring. On the other hand, a slick surface makes it difficult to write legibly. The Motion display with and without the View Anywhere display option is designed to deliver the optimal Tablet PC writing and viewing experience.
