Closing the Gap-Oct. 18, 2002

On Friday Oct. 18 Ed. Rosenthal, President and CEO of NGT, Inc., will be conducting a breakout session entitled "PC-based Speech Input/Voice Output Solutions" at Closing the Gap in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Closing the Gap is an annual conference attended primarily by educators interested in assistive technologies. This presentation will provide a survey of currently available speech input technologies, voice output technologies, and the coalescing of these PC access modalities. The presentation will take place at 3:30 PM in the Fountainbleau Room at the Hotel Sofitel, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Internet Explorer 6.0 Tip

We have been using the new Internet Explorer 6.0 browser. I found several new features that I like. Including the fact that on the Tools/Internet Options/ Advanced tab there is a setting to automatically set Empty Temporary Internet File Folders When Browser Is Closed. I like this, because it minimizes the volume of temp file buildup when using the Internet. I think that using this along with the Delete Cookies (Tools/Internet Options/General tab) can minimize the ongoing impact of using the Internet on your PC.

ViaVoice Training Video (VHS)

A new training video for IBM ViaVoice 10.0 should be available shortly after October 15, 2002. This video (VHS format) was developed by a Canadian consulting firm specializing in ViaVoice technology, and is available for $59.95 US.

Banias Processor

Intel Corp. (San Jose, California,) recently announced development efforts on the new Banias processor. While a marketable product is still some time away, this will be the first Intel processor developed specifically for notebook computing. It promises increased processor speed with reduced power requirements (and hence lower heat output). I believe the timing is just right for this type of chip, as we are seeing the diversification of PC input technologies (including tablets, palms, etc.). In addition, they have recently announced a joint effort with Verisign (San Jose, California-the leading provider of digital trust services) improve wireless security for corporate notebooks based on systems based on this processor.

Microsoft Word and Dragon NaturallySpeaking-Tip

When installing Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional 6.0/6.1 for the first time a small number of users may experience erratic behavior in Microsoft Word XP. There are several settings that may impact Dragon NaturallySpeaking integration and functionality in Microsoft Word XP. With Microsoft Word already installed, and prior to installing Dragon NaturallySpeaking, we believe it is advisable to turn off all of the AutoCorrect features, turn off advanced editing features, and turn off spell checker and grammar checker. The macro security level should be set to medium. Subsequent to installing Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional you can review whether or not the dgnword.dot add in is correctly installed and functional by going to Tools/Templates & Add-ins... this .dot file should not only show as available, but the check box should be checked it Microsoft Word is running and Dragon NaturallySpeaking has been loaded and is running.

Win XP SP1

Many of our clients are currently upgrading their Windows XP computers with SP 1. Should you need to reinstall Dragon NaturallySpeaking for some reason (and you may need to do this after installing this service packs), you will be asked about "replacing DLL files" that are older than those currently on the machine. You want to answer "yes to all" to this dialogue. This is because SP1 is putting on some new DLL files, that may or may not be compliant with Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

Todd Schmeidl, PsyD

It is with sincere pleasure that we are pleased to announce the recent graduation of Dr. Todd Schmeidl, who received his doctoral degree in psychology (PsyD) from Argosy University in September. We believe that Dr. Schmeidl is the first blind quadriplegic to graduate with the doctoral degree from any accredited University in United States. Todd was able to accomplish this with incredible perseverance, the dedication and support of a number of very caring and concerned family members and professionals. We are grateful for the small part that we've played in his success and wish him only the best of luck as he moves further into his professional career.
