Service Release 1 for Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8

Scansoft recently announced the availability of SR1 for DNS 8. This service release is accessed using the updates feature on the Dragon NaturallySpeaking Help menu ("Check for updates"). Here's information about what fixes are available in this patch with the relevant tech-note reference from the Scansoft knowledge base:

4874
Ability to access a Memory Expansion Card when saving a recording on the Tungsten Palm Recorder.
4988
Improved formatting of lists that start with numbers 0-9.
5007
Crash should no longer appear when closing Dragon NaturallySpeaking or when Dragon NaturallySpeaking is adapting the voice files (user files). This error appeared more frequently on Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 due to Advanced Text Services.
5009
The TTS (Text-to-Speech) engine for UK English is now included with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8.
5035
Improved formatting of words when dictating legal documents with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8 Legal
5071
Numbers containing "0" (Spoken as, "Oh.") and decimal points should now be properly formatted. (Example: "Thirty-nine oh three point one" or "3903.1")
5072
The "Open User" dialog should now refresh after upgrading an imported user.
5073
When using the DOCTYPE declaration in HTML files, using the "Link" command should now properly number links.
5074
Crash should no longer occur when adapting the user files after performing additional training on a system with a CPU with hyper-threading support enabled.

In addition to the items listed above, the following issues have also been resolved in the service release:

NGT's Collaboration with Renton Technical College

Over the last two years, NGT had the opportunity to work with a nearby technical school. We assisted with the selection and implementation of a broad range of assistive technologies to support the universal design approach to education. This work was funded in part by a DOE grant. The program manager documented the college's efforts and her information about the work and results appears on the Microsoft accessibility pages. We are honored to have had a small part in this very important work, and would welcome any comments or questions.

DNS Med and EMR Technologies

Over the last few months we've had the chance to work on a number of substantial integrations of DNS Medical 8 and several EMR products (including EPIC, Chart Connect, and IBEX). We've found that each EMR interacts differently with DNS Medical 8, but each has been relatively voice-friendly and, with the onboard dictation box, DNS is working well in each instance.

J-Say Update

As this e-newsletter is being created, the good people at T&T Consultancy are hard at work testing the latest releases of J-Say (Standard 3 and Pro 2) to provide updated interoperability with DNS 8 SR1 and JAWS 6.1. Please watch for an announcement in the next week or so about updating or, anticipate receiving information about this, and other issues, from the new J-Say discussion list that should be available shortly.

OneNote 2003 Service Pack 1

As many of you know, we've continued to push the envelope with Tablet Computing and the Microsoft applications that support this platform. Microsoft has recently posted a service pack (SP1) for OneNote, the specialty application created for handwriting capture on Tablet PCs.

NGT Welcomes Cindi Matson to the Team

We recently had a new addition to our team at NGT. With the recent departure of Dawn Draheim, our Operations Manager, we welcome Cindi Matson who has joined us as Administrative Assistant. Cindi is available Monday through Friday from 8AM to 12 noon, and can be reached at extension 14.

As always we'd like to thank you for the opportunity to continue to be of service to you and your organizations,

Edward Rosenthal, President and CEO
